Taping and Mudding in Ocala and Marion County
Taping and mudding alone, on board someone else hung, runs $1.00 to $2.00 per square foot in the Ocala area. That price covers tape, three coats of joint compound, and sanding to a Level 4 finish, the standard most paint and light fixtures need.
If you want a Level 5 finish, a skim coat over the whole surface for rooms with glossy paint or strong side lighting, we price that as an add-on to the standard taping and mudding work. The extra coat and sanding pass is what catches the flashing you would otherwise see under a bright window.

What Level 4 Finish Means
Level 4 is the standard most homes and offices are finished to. It means every seam has tape and three coats of compound, every screw head is filled, and the wall is sanded smooth enough for flat or eggshell paint to look even.
This is the finish we build into every taping and mudding job unless you ask for Level 5.
When Level 5 Makes Sense
Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the entire wall or ceiling, not just the seams. It is worth the extra cost in rooms with gloss or semi-gloss paint, rooms lit by strong side light from a window, or ceilings where every imperfection shows under a can light.
We price Level 5 as an add-on over the standard taping and mudding rate, since it adds a full coat and sanding pass across the whole surface, not just the joints.

How We Tape a Room
We tape flat seams with paper or mesh tape and three coats of compound, feathering each coat wider than the last so the seam disappears into the wall. Inside corners get a hand-run bead; outside corners get metal or vinyl corner bead taped and finished to a crisp edge.
Every coat gets sanded before the next goes on, and we vacuum dust between passes so the next coat goes on clean.
- Paper or mesh tape on flat seams
- Three coats of compound, feathered wide
- Hand-finished inside corners
- Metal or vinyl bead on outside corners
What Affects the Price
Square footage is the main driver, but a room with a lot of corners, soffits, or a textured ceiling takes more time per square foot than an open rectangle. Ceiling height past eight feet and tight access also add labor.
We walk the space before quoting so the number in writing matches what the room actually needs.
Questions
Level 4 tapes and finishes the seams and screw heads to a smooth, paintable surface. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the whole wall or ceiling, which hides more under gloss paint or strong side light.
Yes. Taping and mudding is priced and scheduled on its own, whether we hung the board or another crew did.
Three coats on standard seams, sanded between each one. Level 5 work adds a full skim coat on top of that.
